Description
The positive effects of reflective practices in education have been widely reported. However, little research attention has focused on how to facilitate reflective practices among aspiring primary English teachers. Through four nine-week online courses delivered by educators in Australia to fourteen undergraduate students living in central Vietnam between February 2024 and March 2026, we offer a novel way of developing aspiring teachers’ reflective teaching and learning skills. In this presentation, we present a literature review of (1) the applications of sociocultural theory and reflective practices, (2) the integration of reflective practices and videos in teaching and learning, (3) we explain how the proposed five-dimensional reflective cycle framework, DATAE, can assist educators in the design of English courses, (4) how we design online learning activities to mentor aspiring primary teachers to reflect using the DATAE framework (5) then we present qualitative data posted by the participants on discussion forums via Moodle, (6) provide insights into undergraduate students’ learning experiences and their attitudes towards reflective learning and teaching (7) and finally we discuss the implications and provide recommendations. The findings from this study supports the view that DATAE framework is an effective strategy and videos are practical tools for educators to mentor aspiring teachers to practice reflective learning and teaching – even by distant educators. This study contributes to the literature of English-Medium Instructions, and it is in line with the Vietnamese national plan (2025–2035) in repositioning English as a compulsory second language in all schools by 2035.
