Description
Light from electronic devices has very negative effects on the nervous system, often resulting in reduced and poor quality sleep. Poor sleep and sleep deprivation have a significant effect on the brain and behavior. Sleep deprivation degrades the connection between the prefrontal cortex (executive decisions) and the amygdala (fear and emotions), making people more impulsive and prone to depression. Sound decision-making plummets. The symptoms of sleep deprivation and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are strikingly similar. It has become quite common to misdiagnose sleep deprivation as ADHD and to begin medicating children and adults for what is actually the negative after-effects of excessive exposure to electronic light. This presentation will introduce and explain this poorly understood yet very common problem affecting our society, particularly with respect to education. Approaches for correcting and reversing these negative effects will be introduced. As educators, we should understand this critical issue and educate our learners and parents about it.
