Reading comprehension is an essential skill for vocational students, as it enables them to access professional knowledge and technical materials. This study explores the use of reading strategies among second-year non-English-major students at a vocational college in Vietnam. Data were collected from 53 students and several lecturers through questionnaires and interviews. The findings show that although students recognize the importance of reading, they tend to rely on word-by-word translation and rarely apply effective strategies such as skimming and scanning. Limited vocabulary, especially technical terms, along with long texts and time pressure, are identified as major difficulties. In addition, students lack the ability to monitor and adjust their reading process.
To address these issues, the study proposes several practical solutions, including learning vocabulary through context and visual support, practicing task-based reading techniques, and using digital tools to support comprehension. It also emphasizes the importance of collaborative learning activities to enhance motivation.

Biography

Hello everyone, my name is Hanh. I am an English teacher at Son La College in Vietnam. I have taught English for several years and truly enjoy helping students improve their communication skills and confidence. At my college, I teach grammar, speaking, listening, reading, and writing to students from different backgrounds. I believe English is an important subject because it opens opportunities for education, careers, and international communication. Therefore, I always try to create interesting, practical, and interactive lessons for my students. Besides teaching, I enjoy reading books, listening to music, and exploring new teaching methods to improve my professional knowledge. I am friendly, hardworking, and patient, so I always support my students whenever they need help with their studies. In the future, I hope to continue developing my teaching skills and contribute more to education in Son La Province. I enjoy traveling and meeting people from different cultures.
