Description
Onomastics has not been systematically included into the English as a foreign language curriculum in Vietnam. This might lead to learners missing chances to gain intercultural competency. This project aims to provide a paradigm for embedding onomastics in EFL curricula and evaluate its influence on cultural awareness and vocabulary retention . The research used a sequential mixed design, and 68 second-year EFL students from a university in Hai Phong took part in the study. The experimental group (34 students) studied the onomastics curriculum (personal and place names) for 8 weeks. The control group (34 students) followed the usual program. The data consisted of pre- and post-tests, questionnaires, interviews and feed-back diaries. Findings indicated considerable improvement for the experimental group in cultural awareness (t=4.82, p<0.001) and vocabulary retention (t=3.96, p<0.01). The qualitative investigation identified four themes: individualization, cultural exploration, learning motivation, and practical application. The research offers a proven pragmatic framework proving the potential of Onomastics to improve the language and intercultural competency of Vietnamese students concurrently.
