Description

The standardized proficiency tests and their washback effects have been drawing great attention from researchers across the globe. The current study investigates the impacts of the Vietnamese standardized test of English proficiency (VSTEP) on non English-majored undergraduates’ behaviors during test preparation process. This research adopted a mixed-methods approach, utilizing two primary research instruments namely questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were gathered through survey questionnaires with 157 non English-majored juniors and seniors at a public university in the eastern part of Dak Lak province, Vietnam. Furthermore, qualitative data were collected from semi-structured interviews with 5 student participants to amplify the data pools. The findings from the questionnaire indicated the most popular out-of-class activities students did for enhancing their English proficiency. In addition, a majority of the respondents believed that the VSTEP test would accurately measure students’ English standards and motivated them to learn English. Besides, the interview data provided deeper information about the amount of time they spent on preparing for the VSTEP test and how they prepare for it.
