Description

Vietnam's repositioning of English from a foreign to a second language is most often discussed in primary, secondary, and tertiary contexts, yet some of the earliest sites where this shift is being lived out are bilingual preschools serving children aged as young as eighteen months old. In these settings, the question is not whether young learners can master grammar or pass tests, but whether the classroom conditions allow English to function as a real medium of play, relationship, and meaning-making rather than a subject to be performed. Grounded in Finnish early childhood education principles — play-based learning, whole-child development, emotional safety, and teacher attunement — this poster shares experience-informed reflections drawn from curriculum design and ongoing classroom observation cycles in a Finnish-methodology bilingual preschool in Ho Chi Minh City. Drawing on curriculum artefacts, teacher observation notes, and reflective feedback sessions with Vietnamese and international teaching teams, the poster presents three practical areas: scaffolding English as a daily medium rather than an isolated lesson; using routines, play, and co-regulation to support voluntary English use; and positioning Vietnamese co-teachers, families, and L1 as supports rather than obstacles to ESL development. Participants will leave with concrete classroom examples and a discussion framework for considering how an ESL-oriented early childhood ecosystem might be designed at the very beginning of a learner's journey.
