Description
This study analyzes grammatical errors encountered by Vietnamese EFL learners in IELTS Writing Task 2 at an English center. By employing a mixed-methods approach, the paper examines a corpus consisting of 65 essays composed by 21 intermediate-level students. A five-step error analysis model was used together with a Linguistic Category Taxonomy, which was incorporated into the analysis framework of the data collected, consisting of nine error types classified into three broader categories: (1) Noun Phrases, (2) Verb Phrases, and (3) Sentence Structure. The findings reveal a total of 420 grammatical errors, with Noun Phrase errors accounting for the majority, including Pluralization (33.3%) and Articles (20.7%). The qualitative findings from 8 participants in semi-structured interviews reveal a notable misalignment between learners' perceptions and reality; while students identified tenses as their main struggle, the quantitative data showed a much higher frequency of misused basic word endings and plural forms, and confirmed that these grammatical errors mostly resulted from L1 interference. Beyond analysis, the study concludes with its limitations, recommendations for further studies, and practical implications to address these persistent grammatical challenges.
