Description
In the era of rapid scientific and technological advancement, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of both everyday life and education. In the field of language teaching and learning, AI has recently enhanced the diversity and effectiveness of both online and face-to-face lessons. At a university in Hanoi, AI is regarded as a supportive tool that helps students tackle challenging questions and tasks in General English (GE), thereby improving their academic performance. This study explores students’ autonomy when using AI during a GE course. A quantitative approach was adopted, specifically through the use of a questionnaire administered to students. The findings indicate that most of the students perceive AI as a helpful partner in addressing difficult English tasks both in class and at home. However, about half of the participants expressed concerns about the accuracy of AI-generated answers and maintained their autonomy by cross-checking information with reference books and reliable dictionaries. These results offer several pedagogical implications for English teaching and learning.
