Description
As Vietnam gradually changes English from a foreign language to a second language, English classes need to become more practical, interactive, and communication-focused for young learners. This paper explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and multilingual arts activities can help create an ESL-oriented classroom for Grade 6 students at a lower secondary school in Vietnam.
The study used classroom action research and integrated AI-supported tools such as ChatGPT, Canva AI, text-to-image applications, and AI storytelling tools with activities including music, drawing, drama, and bilingual performances. These activities encouraged students to use English in more meaningful and creative ways beyond textbook exercises.
The findings show that combining AI and multilingual arts helped improve students’ confidence in speaking English, increased classroom participation, and encouraged creativity and communication. Students became more willing to use English naturally during classroom activities. The approach also created a more inclusive and student-centered learning environment where English was used as a tool for interaction and expression rather than only as a school subject.
This paper suggests that AI-supported multilingual teaching can be an effective way to support the transition from EFL to ESL in Vietnamese lower secondary education.
