Description

Focusing on classroom-based or self-access learning contexts, this session shows how to integrate technology into listening practices. Using online resources, iPads, and Voice Memos, learners can become more engaged with their listening and their learning progress. First, participants select their listening practice. Following resource guidelines, learners can consider the input length, level, and topic suitability for their listening practice. Next, participants are shown how to take notes on their listening using the Scribble function on iPads. The tablet function can be used in listening practices to help learners bridge the gap between taking handwritten and typed notes when using their devices. Finally, participants are shown how to develop reflection journal prompts for learners to use as oral, rather than written, recordings. Using self-reflection prompts, learners can think about their answer before recording their responses using Voice Memos (or similar apps). These approaches are then summarized by outlining an in-class and extensive listening design that could be adapted for various teaching contexts. The session concludes by highlighting the benefits for learners using digital devices to complete their listening practices. Participants are also shown how learners can engage in metacognitive instruction to support them in extensive listening contexts. Presenting the notetaking guidelines, prompts, and feedback in the session illustrates how to implement an online journal component while integrating metacognitive strategies and listening skill practice with technology for second language learners.
