Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) has been advocated as a potentially effective approach in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in Asian contexts, including Vietnam. However, little is known about perceptions of tasks used by teachers in actual classroom practices at highschool education. Furthermore, in the context of Vietnam, where TBLT is claimed to be adopted in the current national English curriculum and textbooks, a few studies have been carried out to investigate the extent of orientation of the teachers toward TBLT.
This study therefore examines teachers’ perceptions about Task-Based Language Teaching in EFL classes. The research project included the participation of thirty teachers from various high schools in Bac Ninh. The convenience sampling method was used to collect the study sample. A questionnaire and a follow-up interview were used to collect data from the study subjects. Cronbach’s alpha demonstrated the questionnaire's internal consistency and reliability. Both qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods were used. The questionnaire results were analyzed using SPSS version 29. The statistical data analysis was descriptive. Mean scores, frequency analysis, and percentage analysis were used. A qualitative analysis was done on the information gleaned from the interview. Exploratory and interpretive qualitative data were produced by the analysis.
Findings of the study revealed that the participating teachers had positive perceptions of TBLT, recognizing its communicative and goal-directed nature, its potential for promoting language development, and its alignment with student-centered approaches. However, some teachers expressed concerns about implementing tasks solely in pairs or groups and excluding explicit grammar and form instruction. Several factors were also identified as influencing teachers' willingness to implement TBLT. Drawing on the findings, several recommendations can be made to improve the implementation of TBLT in high schools in Bac Ninh.
