Speaker
Description
This study explores the relationship between foreign language speaking anxiety and speaking performance among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, grounded in the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). It specifically examines the effects of three core dimensions—communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, and test anxiety—while investigating the mediating role of self-efficacy. A quantitative research design was employed, with data collected from first-year English-major students at a Vietnamese university using a structured questionnaire adapted from the FLCAS and a self-efficacy scale. Speaking performance scores were also incorporated. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was conducted to test the proposed relationships. The findings reveal that speaking anxiety has a significant negative effect on speaking performance, with communication apprehension and fear of negative evaluation emerging as the most influential predictors. Importantly, self-efficacy was found to partially mediate the relationship between anxiety and performance, indicating that higher levels of self-efficacy can buffer the adverse effects of anxiety on learners’ oral proficiency. These results extend the FLCAS framework by integrating a key cognitive construct and underscore the importance of fostering learners’ self-efficacy in reducing anxiety and enhancing speaking outcomes in EFL classrooms.
