Description

While research on Global Englishes in Vietnam has focused heavily on well-resourced urban universities and policy analysis, the beliefs of stakeholders at regional universities - especially where English-major education is only just emerging - remain under-examined. This qualitative case study explores the Global Englishes beliefs of 11 first-year students and 9 lecturers in a newly established English-major program at a regional technical university in the Mekong Delta. Framed around a Global Englishes Language Teaching perspective, together with teacher cognition and learner beliefs theory, the study drew on semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis. Participants remained strongly oriented toward native-speaker norms, though they showed early signs of awareness of global varieties. Lecturers, however, reported a gap between their pedagogical beliefs and classroom practices, which they attributed to institutional and assessment pressures. Both groups also viewed English primarily as a route to socioeconomic mobility, while their views remained constrained by limited exposure to varieties of English beyond the textbook. The study extends Global Englishes research to this under-examined context and offers practical insights for developing curricula that reflect the global diversity of English.
