Description
This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using simulation in improving cadets’ oral communication skills in Military English at the Military College of Special Forces. The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving 30 third-year non-English major cadets with an English proficiency level equivalent to A2 CEFR. Data were collected through a survey questionnaire, pre-test and post-test speaking tasks, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings show that cadets experienced difficulties in all four components of oral communication competence. The post-test and paired-samples t-test results demonstrate statically significant improvements in all competencies after the intervention, particularly strategic, discourse, and sociolinguistic competence. The semi-structured interview findings also reflect that simulation activities can boost cadets’ confidence, interaction management, and flexibility in military contexts. The study suggests that simulation can provide a practical and effective approach to developing oral communication skills in Military English through realistic learning activities. At the same time, the results further encourage the use of simulation as a useful communication teaching method for designing military English training programs.
