Workshop Pedagogy and Curriculum Workshops

Description

Despite the growing availability of digital teaching tools, many EFL practitioners continue to manage their lessons across multiple disconnected platforms — presentation slides, online timers, name-picker apps, and printed task instructions — switching between them in real time. This fragmented approach increases teacher cognitive load, disrupts lesson momentum, and creates a visually chaotic environment that competes for student attention rather than directing it.
This workshop introduces Classroomscreen - a free, browser-based interactive whiteboard - as a unified lesson management dashboard that consolidates essential classroom functions onto a single, customizable screen. Drawing on principles of cognitive load theory, task-based language teaching, and structured classroom management, the presenter demonstrates how combining a visible countdown timer, written task instructions, a live group-maker, and a sound-level monitor into one display can reduce instructional transition time, clarify task expectations, and support a low-anxiety learning environment particularly in remedial and mixed-ability EFL contexts.
The 15-minute demonstration models a live screen build for a grammar presentation stage, contrasting it with a conventional slide-based approach. Participants then engage in a structured 40-minute hands-on activity in which they independently design a Classroomscreen dashboard for a 15-minute EFL teaching stage of their own choosing, guided by a lesson design planning protocol and a peer review framework.
By the end of the session, participants will have produced a reusable screen template applicable to their immediate teaching context. More broadly, the workshop repositions screen design as a form of lesson planning, one that asks teachers to make explicit decisions about what students see, when they see it, and how that visibility shapes learning behavior.

Biography

Nguyen Cao Bao Ngoc is an independent researcher, English language educator, and educational entrepreneur based in Vietnam. She is the founder and director of Anh ngữ Ms. Ngọc, an English language center that works closely with primary, secondary and high school learners, particularly students who struggle with English foundations, classroom confidence, and long-term learning discipline. Her academic background in International Relations informs her current research interest in how global education policies are translated into local classroom realities, especially as Vietnam moves from a traditional EFL model toward a more ESL-oriented educational ecosystem. Alongside her center-based teaching and management work, she has trained approximately 60 Vietnamese English teachers through her professional development program, Teachers Boost. Through this initiative, she has observed recurring challenges faced by non-native English-speaking teachers, including classroom management during communicative tasks, student resistance to spontaneous speaking, first-language interference, and the gap between textbook design and classroom implementation. She has also developed and distributed Global Success learning materials, which provide practical insight into how national curriculum expectations are interpreted by teachers in real teaching contexts. Her ongoing research agenda focuses on classroom management dynamics, the psychological and pedagogical effects of single-language classroom practices, and parent-teacher communication in language education. Her work aims to offer practical, context-sensitive solutions for teachers and language centers navigating Vietnam’s transition toward more English-rich classrooms.
