Applying AI Writing Assistants to Improve English Writing Skills and Learner Autonomy among Vietnamese High School Students
As Vietnam moves toward a more communicative and learner-centered English education model, the integration of artificial intelligence into English teaching has become an important direction for educational innovation. This study investigates the application of AI writing assistants to improve English writing skills and develop learner autonomy among Vietnamese high school students.
The AI writing assistants were used to support students in different stages of the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, grammar checking, vocabulary improvement, sentence revision, and final editing. Students practiced paragraph writing, email writing, opinion essays, narrative writing, and exam-oriented writing tasks. They were guided to use AI as a learning support tool rather than a replacement for their own thinking and writing.
Using pedagogical experimentation, classroom observation, student surveys, writing assessment, and document analysis, the study found that students improved their idea development, paragraph organization, grammar accuracy, vocabulary use, coherence, and confidence in writing. The findings also showed that AI writing assistants helped students develop self-editing habits, independent learning skills, and greater responsibility for their writing process.
The study suggests that AI writing assistants can support personalized feedback, reduce teachers’ workload, and promote learner-centered writing instruction. In conclusion, the application of AI writing assistants offers a practical and effective approach to improving English writing skills and learner autonomy among Vietnamese high school students, especially in the context of digital transformation in education.

My name is Man, and I am a teacher of English in Sơn La, a beautiful mountainous province in Vietnam. I have always loved learning languages, especially English, because it helps me communicate with people from different cultures and understand the world better. As a teacher, I enjoy sharing knowledge with my students and helping them improve their English skills every day. I believe that learning English can open many opportunities for young people in their studies, work, and future life.
In my free time, I like watching football matches. Football helps me relax after working hours and gives me excitement and energy. I also enjoy discussing matches, players, and teams with my friends.
