Description
English plays a crucial role in education and international integration; however, Vietnam’s English proficiency level is currently moderate and ranks around the middle among Asian countries. Vocabulary is an essential component of language learning, and although there are many methods for vocabulary learning, spaced repetition has been proven effective in numerous international studies. In Vietnam, however, research on this method remains limited and has not clearly identified the factors influencing its effectiveness.
This study employs a mixed method approach, combining qualitative research through in-depth interviews with 10 learners and 5 experts, and quantitative research through a questionnaire survey of 100 participants, to identify the factors affecting spaced repetition in learning English vocabulary and determine the most influential factor. In addition, the study compares the Vietnamese context with countries that share similar characteristics in using English as a second language to draw appropriate lessons for proposing practical solutions.
The findings indicate that the three most influential factors are learners’ motivation and persistence, the practice environment, and learning tools and applications. Based on these findings, the study proposes two groups of solutions for both learners and teachers to improve the effectiveness of vocabulary learning through spaced repetition. These contributions not only enrich the scientific foundation for research on spaced repetition in the Vietnamese context but also strengthen the practical basis for developing pedagogical and technological approaches to enhance English vocabulary learning as a second language.
