Description

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has been recognized as an effective approach to improving English learning in primary education through the integration of subject content and language development. By learning language in meaningful contexts, students can enhance their English communication skills while developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Among interdisciplinary approaches, Singapore Math methods are considered highly suitable for young learners because of their visual, logical, and step-by-step learning process through the Concrete - Pictorial - Abstract (CPA) model.
However, implementing CLIL in primary classrooms remains challenging due to learners’ limited English proficiency and the abstract nature of mathematical concepts. Therefore, teachers need appropriate instructional strategies to support both content understanding and language acquisition.
This presentation shares practical experiences in applying CLIL through the use of Singapore Math methods in primary English classrooms. Specifically, it demonstrates how the CPA model can be integrated with the 4Cs framework of CLIL (Content, Communication, Cognition, and Culture) to design engaging and age-appropriate learning activities. In addition, several teaching strategies, including scaffolding, visual support, collaborative learning, and communicative tasks, will be presented to increase learners’ interaction and engagement.
Sample integrated Math-English activities and lesson procedures will also be introduced as practical evidence of classroom implementation and pedagogical effectiveness. Participants will gain practical ideas, sample activities, and adaptable lesson procedures that can be applied in their own teaching contexts to enhance integrated language learning in primary classrooms.

Biography
