Description

Traditionally, teachers assess student writing through feedbacking and rubric-based scores, a process that can be both subjective and time-consuming. This study addressed the gap by employing a corpus-based approach. Two sets of narrative-reflective essays written by Thai university students were collected as the target corpora, and two sets of AI-generated essays with narrative-reflective characteristics were produced as the reference corpora. Keyword analysis was used to compare the student essays with the AI-generated essays to identify the keywords that illustrate the characteristics of the student essays. Additionally, the AI-generated essays were compared with the student essays to verify the findings. From the findings, the first target corpus contains key linguistic features that highlight students’ focus on personal experiences and relationships, expressed through basic evaluative and descriptive language. The second target corpus shows key linguistic features more typical of an informative or explanatory characteristic. The AI-generated reference corpora reveal that both target corpora lack reflective engagement as required by the writing task. These corpora also reveal the consistent accuracy in verb usage and agreement in the second target corpus, indicating that it was likely produced by AI-based writing tools, as it is highly similar to the reference corpora. This study demonstrates how a corpus-based approach, using AI-generated texts as a reference corpus, can provide a systematic and evidence-based method for assessing the distinctive characteristics of student writing. The findings also carry pedagogical implications by guiding teachers in determining relevant grammatical topics that may support the development of students’ writing skills.
