Description

In today’s technology-driven world, digital video communication plays an increasingly important role in students’ academic and social lives. However, many secondary school students still experience anxiety and low confidence when speaking English in front of cameras. Teacher-supported video production activities can provide meaningful opportunities for speaking practice, creative language use, and the development of on-camera presentation skills.
This presentation reports on a classroom-based instructional project conducted with students from a Grade 9 class at a public lower secondary school in Vietnam during the 2025–2026 academic year. The project aimed to enhance students’ speaking confidence through collaborative video production activities integrated into speaking lessons and project-based learning tasks. Working in groups with teacher support, students planned, rehearsed, recorded, and edited short English videos related to lesson topics closely aligned with the Global Success textbook series and real-life communication contexts. Data were collected through classroom observation, student surveys, and comparisons of students’ speaking performance and participation before and after the project implementation.
The findings indicate that the video production activities increased students’ willingness to speak English, reduced anxiety when speaking in front of cameras, and promoted greater learner engagement and autonomy. In addition, the project contributed to the development of a digital video resource bank that can support future speaking instruction. The presentation discusses practical implications for technology-mediated speaking instruction and learner confidence development in secondary English education contexts.
