Speaker
Description
For many Vietnamese students, speaking English remains one of the most challenging aspects of language learning. Despite years of studying grammar and vocabulary, many learners still feel anxious, afraid of making mistakes, or reluctant to speak in front of others. In public-school classrooms, limited speaking opportunities and fear of embarrassment often result in low participation during speaking activities.
This study investigates how AI-supported learning tools can create a more supportive environment for speaking practice among Vietnamese EFL learners. The study was conducted with 80 Grade 10 students at Bac Lieu High School over a ten-week period. Students participated in blended learning activities using AI-powered tools such as chatbots, pronunciation feedback applications, speech recognition features, and AI-generated speaking prompts. Data were collected through speaking assessments, classroom observations, questionnaires, and student reflections.
The findings revealed improvements not only in students’ fluency and pronunciation, but also in their confidence and willingness to communicate in English. Many students reported feeling less anxious when practicing with AI tools because they could repeat activities, make mistakes freely, and learn at their own pace without fear of judgment. Even quieter students gradually became more willing to participate in speaking activities.
This study provides practical pedagogical implications for integrating accessible AI-supported tools into English speaking instruction, particularly in Vietnamese public-school classrooms where opportunities for authentic communication remain limited. The findings also suggest that AI is most effective when combined with supportive teaching practices and emotionally safe learning environments that encourage students to use English with greater confidence.
