Description
Abstract
This presentation explores how mobile applications and self-directed learning can be integrated to enhance English speaking skills among ESL learners in the Lao context, which may share similarities with many teaching environments in Vietnam. The presenter will explain how mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) creates flexible and engaging opportunities for students to practice speaking beyond the traditional classroom. Participants will learn about the challenges our typical student commonly faces in developing speaking proficiency, including limited practice opportunities, lack of confidence, and fear of making mistakes.
The session will demonstrate how to use mobile applications such as speaking practice apps, English learning videos, and interactive digital tools to support learner autonomy and communication skills. The presenter will share practical strategies for encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning while teachers act as facilitators and motivators. Examples of classroom activities and mobile learning tools will be presented to show how technology can increase student participation, confidence, and vocabulary development.
The session will also introduce ways to combine self-directed learning principles with mobile technology to create meaningful speaking practice inside and outside the classroom. Research findings from recent studies on MALL and self-directed learning will also be discussed to highlight their positive impact on language proficiency, learner motivation, and engagement.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify practical approaches for integrating mobile apps into speaking instruction and adapting these ideas to their own teaching contexts. Participants will leave with ideas for promoting independent learning, improving student confidence, and creating more interactive English speaking environments in ESL classrooms
