Description

Tools of generative AI such as ChatGPT can provide immediate feedback on students’ writing. However, many EFL learners in Vietnam still struggle to move beyond superficial, grammar-based revisions during the revision process. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating how teacher-led prompting strategies can help Grade 9 students shift from simply linguistic accuracy to deeper discourse-level improvements. Employing a one-group pretest-posttest design with 32 secondary students, the research introduced a structured prompting framework designed to facilitate more intentional interactions with AI. Quantitative analysis using paired-samples t-tests revealed not only a gain in the overall score but also a significant change in students’ treatment of paragraph organization and coherence after a series of classroom interventions. More importantly, qualitative results suggest that the scaffolding of teachers empowered the learners to shift from passive recipients of AI suggestions to critical evaluators of machine-generated content. These results underscore a vital pedagogical shift: the necessity of balancing AI efficiency with teacher agency in order to foster genuine meaning-level writing development in the contemporary EFL classroom.
