Description
As Vietnam moves toward a more ESL-oriented approach to English education, writing instruction in higher education is increasingly expected to promote learner autonomy and critical engagement with feedback. At the same time, artificial intelligence tools are becoming widely used as sources of writing feedback, offering fast and accessible support for students. Drawing on formative feedback and learner autonomy perspectives, this study adopts an action research approach based on iterative cycles of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting to explore how AI-generated feedback can be integrated into IELTS-oriented writing courses. The study was conducted with 29 third-year English-majored students over eight weeks. During the cycles, AI feedback was introduced and progressively refined through guided use and structured reflection. Data were collected through draft comparisons, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings show that students were more likely to take up feedback and make accurate surface-level revisions, while also becoming more aware of their language issues. However, several challenges emerged, including overreliance on AI, uncritical acceptance of feedback, and a tendency to focus mainly on surface corrections. These findings suggest that AI can serve as a useful feedback partner, but its effectiveness depends on how it is guided and integrated into classroom practice. The study offers practical insights for teachers seeking to use AI feedback in a responsible and pedagogically meaningful way.
