Description
Teaching with digital learning tools has highlighted the role of personalized environments in second language acquisition. This study investigates the effectiveness of custom-built applications, developed through Artificial Intelligence platforms such as Gemini, Google AI Studio in enhancing ESL and EFL skills among high school students in mountainous areas. The primary objective is to evaluate how these personalized tools contribute to vocabulary acquisition and listening comprehension while fostering learner autonomy. A mixed-methods research design was implemented, involving 86 participants over a 10-week instructional period. Students engaged with interactive tasks and multimedia resources tailored to their specific proficiency levels. Data collection included pre- and post-intervention assessments alongside learner attitude surveys and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative findings demonstrated statistically significant improvements in vocabulary retention and overall language test scores. Qualitatively, students expressed heightened motivation and engagement, citing the interactive multimedia experiences as a key factor in making learning more accessible compared to traditional materials. The study concludes that custom-built Artificial Intelligence tools effectively complement classroom instruction and promote self-directed study habits within the TESOL framework. It is recommended that educators leverage CALL methodologies to create dynamic and inclusive learning environments.
Biography
My full name is Phung Thi Lam Hanh, an English teacher at An Lao Upper Secondary School in Gia Lai province, where I have been teaching for nearly 18 years. Most of my students belong to mountainous areas and face significant challenges in learning English alongside their mother tongue and the national language. Recognizing these difficulties, I focus on creating supportive and practical teaching methods to help students improve their language skills and build confidence in using English.
Throughout my career, I have been committed to exploring innovative approaches to language instruction. My recent study examines the use of AI to create some English teaching and learning apps among high school students. It highlights how such tools can support the development of linguistic skills, promote learner autonomy, and boost engagement, while also addressing issues of technological access and effective integration into the classroom. I am passionate about making English education more inclusive, especially for students in disadvantaged and multicultural settings.
