Description
Formative assessment is essential for enhancing learner progress, yet its implementation in face-to-face large classes often presents practical difficulties. Gamified learning platforms such as Quizizz and Classpoint have emerged as potential tools to address these challenges by increasing student engagement and providing immediate feedback. While previous research has examined these tools individually, studies exploring their combined application remain limited, particularly within the context of Vietnamese higher education. This mixed-methods study investigated the synergistic effects of integrating Quizizz and Classpoint in formative assessment practices at Tay Nguyen University. The research involved 325 EFL students, divided into an experimental group using both tools and a control group receiving traditional instruction. Data were collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews, then analysed using descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, and thematic analysis. The findings revealed that the integration of Quizizz and Classpoint significantly enhanced student engagement and motivation. Participants in the experimental group demonstrated higher levels of participation and more positive perceptions of the assessment process. Furthermore, the immediate feedback features of both platforms facilitated more accurate and comprehensive tracking of learner progress. As one of the first studies to examine the combined use of these tools in a Vietnamese EFL setting, this research provides valuable empirical evidence and offers practical pedagogical implications for implementing technology-enhanced formative assessment in similar large-class environments.
