Description
The integration of digital platforms in language learning has become a prevalent approach in modern education. This study explores the perceptions and practices of high school students using the Duolingo application for English vocabulary learning. The study examined key factors that contribute to the platform's appeal and effectiveness, such as its gamified learning environment, ease of access, and the variety of exercises it offers for vocabulary practice. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both surveys and interviews with 360 students from three high schools in Gia Lai province to assess their views on Duolingo's usefulness, enjoyment, and educational value in learning English vocabulary. Findings from this research indicate that students generally perceive Duolingo as a beneficial tool in their language learning arsenal, appreciating its interactive and engaging nature which aids in retention and practical application of vocabulary. However, students also noted limitations in terms of depth, particularly in grammar and comprehensive language usage. This study contributes to the academic discourse on the impact of gamified learning tools in educational settings, providing evidence that while such tools are effective for engaging students and supplementing traditional learning methods, they should not replace more comprehensive instructional approaches. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term impact of such applications on language proficiency and to extend the scope to other aspects of language learning beyond vocabulary.
