Speaker
Description
The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English language education presents both transformative opportunities and significant ethical challenges. This presentation shares a reflective journey of implementing AI tools with junior high school students, focusing on the transition from mere tool adoption to responsible digital citizenship.
The author explores various AI-driven applications used to enhance students’ speaking and writing skills. On the positive side, the integration significantly boosted students’ confidence and provided personalized feedback that was previously difficult to achieve in large classes. However, the implementation also revealed critical drawbacks, such as over-reliance on AI for homework completion and potential threats to academic integrity.
To address these "less-than-ideal" outcomes, the session discusses specific strategies used to foster responsibility, including the design of "AI-resistant" tasks and explicit instruction on prompt engineering with ethical boundaries. By analyzing what worked and what failed, the presenter offers a practical framework for secondary teachers to balance AI's efficiency with students' cognitive development. Participants will gain insights into how to guide young learners to view AI as a collaborative partner rather than a shortcut for learning. This session aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion of shifting from EFL to an ESL environment where technology is used mindfully and sustainably.
