Description

As Vietnam gradually moves toward a more functionally oriented ESL trajectory, English language classrooms are increasingly expected to promote authentic communication, interdisciplinary learning, and meaningful language use beyond grammar-focused instruction. In this context, Content-Based Instruction (CBI) has emerged as an effective pedagogical approach that integrates language learning with engaging academic and real-world content. At the same time, advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping how teachers design materials, scaffold learning, and support student engagement in English language teaching.
Grounded in communicative language teaching and CBI principles, this interactive workshop explores how AI-enhanced CBI can support more learner-centered and communicative English instruction in contemporary classrooms. Participants will examine practical ways AI tools can assist in generating authentic materials, adapting content to different proficiency levels, promoting multimodal learning, and encouraging critical thinking and interaction.
Drawing on classroom-informed examples and current literature, the workshop also addresses practical concerns related to AI integration, including overreliance on technology, academic integrity, teacher readiness, and unequal access to digital resources. Participants will engage in collaborative activities and lesson-design discussions to explore how AI can function as a supportive instructional tool rather than a replacement for teachers.
By the end of the workshop, participants will gain practical strategies for integrating AI into CBI lessons while maintaining communicative effectiveness, learner autonomy, and meaningful language learning objectives in evolving ESL-oriented educational contexts.
