Description

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence has transformed language education by creating new opportunities for interactive and autonomous learning. In English language teaching, AI-powered conversational tools such as ChatGPT have recently gained attention for their potential to support speaking practice beyond traditional classroom settings. Grounded in technology-enhanced language learning and communicative language teaching, this study investigates the effectiveness of ChatGPT-assisted speaking practice among EFL students at Ha Long University, Vietnam. Using a true-experimental design, the study involved 68 undergraduate students divided into an experimental group and a control group over a four-week intervention period. While the experimental group engaged in speaking activities supported by ChatGPT, the control group participated in conventional speaking instruction without AI integration. Data were collected through pre- and post-speaking tests and questionnaires examining students’ learning perceptions and experiences. The findings revealed that students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly greater improvement in speaking performance compared to those in the control group. Questionnaire data further indicated positive learner perceptions of ChatGPT-assisted learning, particularly regarding increased confidence, motivation, learner autonomy, and opportunities for extended speaking practice. The study highlights the pedagogical value of AI-assisted interaction as a supplementary tool for enhancing speaking development and learner engagement in EFL contexts. The findings contribute to the growing body of research on AI-assisted language learning and provide practical implications for integrating AI technologies into speaking instruction. Recommendations for future research include larger-scale studies and longer intervention periods to further examine the long-term effectiveness of AI-supported speaking practice.
