Description

Children with autism spectrum disorder often encounter significant barriers in traditional English as a Second Language classrooms due to sensory sensitivities and communication challenges. This study introduces BuddyPuppy, a specialized web-based platform designed to support language acquisition and social development through visual-spatial learning strategies within a sensory-friendly digital environment. Grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis and behavioral learning principles, the platform integrates digital adaptations of the Picture Exchange Communication System and Social Stories to facilitate structured language learning experiences. The study employed a mixed-methods approach involving a one-month pilot trial with thirteen participants aged seven to twelve. Quantitative findings revealed that approximately sixty-nine percent of participants demonstrated substantial improvements in functional communication skills, with average scores increasing from 5.92 to 7.23. Furthermore, qualitative interviews with parents indicated increased learner engagement and longer attention spans, typically increasing from five minutes to approximately fifteen minutes. Participants also demonstrated more frequent spontaneous use of English phrases in daily contexts. Findings suggest that integrating structured behavioral interventions into technology-enhanced language learning tools helps reduce sensory overload while promoting communicative participation among diverse learners. Practical recommendations for inclusive TESOL practices and personalized digital interventions will be discussed to provide educators with evidence-based strategies for diverse classrooms.
