Description

Vocabulary learning is significantly challenging for vocational college EFL learners, especially in ESP courses where learners are required to understand and use technical terminology in workplace- related contexts. The purpose of this study was to investigate how explicit vocabulary instruction and ChatGPT-assisted practice improve ESP vocabulary learning for vocational college EFL learners. Using a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test control group design, with classroom observations conducted throughout the intervention, the study involved the random assignment of 48 vocational college EFL learners to a control group and an experimental group. Data were collected through ESP vocabulary assessments (pre-test and post-test) and classroom observations. Over a four-week intervention, the experimental group participated in explicit vocabulary instruction integrated with teacher-guided ChatGPT-assisted practice, while the control group received explicit vocabulary instruction without ChatGPT assistance. Quantitative analysis indicated overall improvement in ESP vocabulary performance across both groups following the intervention, with the experimental group showing a slightly greater enhancement in productive ESP vocabulary use and overall test scores, despite no significant between-group differences in ESP vocabulary comprehension. Qualitative findings from classroom observations suggested increased collaborative interaction and more contextualized workplace-related vocabulary use during the ChatGPT-assisted practice. This study contributes to the growing field of AI-assisted language learning by further supporting the pedagogically grounded integration of explicit ESP vocabulary instruction and ChatGPT-assisted practice as a means of facilitating productive ESP vocabulary development in vocational college contexts.
