Description

In Vietnamese upper-secondary English classrooms, speaking practice is often constrained by large classes, limited lesson time, and learners’ fear of public error. This study examines a structured generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) feedback model designed to support Grade 10 students’ monologic English speaking. The model was organized around three connected phases: preparation, guided practice, and reflection for self-regulation. It was grounded in communicative competence, self-regulated learning, mastery learning, foreign language anxiety, and technology integration in language education. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control-group design was adopted within a mixed-methods explanatory framework. Sixty-four students participated, with 33 students in the experimental group practicing speaking through a GenAI platform for six weeks, while 31 students in the control group completed conventional speaking activities. Data were collected through speaking tests, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the experimental group made stronger progress than the control group in fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Students also reported greater confidence, lower anxiety, and clearer awareness of how to set goals, monitor progress, and revise their speaking after feedback. The findings suggest that GenAI feedback can work as a practical extension of classroom instruction, supporting EFL speaking performance and learner autonomy without replacing the teacher’s pedagogical role.
