Description

Artificial Intelligence-assisted speaking platforms are increasingly used in workplace English training to offer flexible speaking practice. However, it remains unclear how adult learners engage with these platforms, especially when their learning is shaped by work schedules, confidence, and limited time for practice. This study examines adult learners’ engagement in AI-assisted English speaking practice in a corporate training program, focusing on platform-based learning behaviors and learners’ explanations of those behaviors. Using an explanatory mixed-methods case study design, data were collected from 26 adult learners through platform analytics, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The platform data, collected between April and June 2025, included goal completion, time on task, videos watched, task completion, and spoken lines. Drawing on Fredricks, Blumenfeld, and Paris’s engagement framework, the study examines behavioral engagement through platform analytics and explores cognitive and emotional engagement through learners’ feedback use, repeated practice, confidence, and anxiety. Learners were grouped based on their learning time, speaking output, goal completion, and regularity of practice. The findings show that learners engaged with the platform in different ways, from sustained and active participation to more irregular or limited use. The interviews also suggest that work demands, trust in artificial intelligence feedback, speaking confidence, and learners’ ability to manage their own practice played an important role in shaping their engagement. The study argues that artificial intelligence-assisted speaking platforms can support oral practice in corporate English training, but their value depends on structured guidance, meaningful feedback use, and task designs that reflect adult learners’ work-based realities.
