Description

As Vietnam pushes for educational reform, high school English teaching is being asked to shift away from a strict test-focused routine and start working towards building real communicative skills and global citizenship. But honestly, most students still treat English as just another foreign language, drilling grammar rules and feeling unsure when it comes to actual conversations—especially if those conversations happen between cultures. This gap makes it clear that teachers need fresh methods to connect what students learn in class with how they use English out in the world. This study tries to boost Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) in Vietnamese high school students by making the most of the “Communication and Culture / CLIL” sections found in the Global Success textbooks (Grades 10–12). The researchers used action research, working with 210 students from six different classes across three grade levels. They put a bunch of student-centered, CLIL-based activities in place—things like intercultural tasks, lively discussions, and project-based learning—to turn the classroom into a space that felt more like learning English as a second language. The results show students got a lot better at communicating, became more culturally aware, and felt more ready to use English in real situations. Mixing CLIL with intercultural learning doesn’t just help students master the language—it gets them genuinely involved. The approach looks promising and can be adapted to high schools across the board, helping move students from learning English as a foreign language to actually using it as a second language.
