Description
The study investigates the challenges faced by teachers in implementing the policy of making English the second language in schools in Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam. From the data collected and theoretical reviews by the author, solutions are suggested in order to overcome these difficulties. The study is primarily an investigation, applying both quantitative and qualitative data collection. A questionnaire is administered to 150 English teachers working in various primary and secondary schools across Thanh Hoa province to identify the major challenges they encounter in carrying out the Decision No. 2371/QĐ-TTg dated October 27, 2025 issued by the Government. In addition, semi-structured interviews are conducted with 10 teachers to gain deeper insights into their experiences, perceptions, and recommendations. The findings reveal several significant challenges, including both teachers and students’ low English proficiency, limited opportunities for authentic language use, inadequate teaching resources, large class sizes, insufficient professional training, and limited access to technology. Teachers also reported pressure related to curriculum demands. Based on these findings, the study suggests several practical solutions to help overcome the obstacles teachers face in the pathway of conducting the above Decision.
Biography
Dr. Nguyen Thi Quyet has been a lecturer of English specializing in Applied Linguistics and TESOL for over 20 years. She has extensive experience in teaching both students majoring in English and those are non-majored at Hong Duc University, Thanh Hoa province. In addition to teaching, she actively participates in academic research, curriculum development, and the design of instructional materials for English learners. Her research interests include English language teaching methodology, translation studies, vocabulary development, and English language. She is particularly interested in improving English teaching quality and promoting advanced teaching technique in language classrooms. Her work aims to support educational innovation and enhance students’ English proficiency in the context of international integration, which is the trigger for the demand of English becoming second language at school today. She is a really active researcher and teacher. So far, she has published 4 English books and several articles in various journals.
