Description
Aligned with the 2018 General Education Program’s shift toward competency-based teaching, this study addresses the persistent challenges in rural Mekong Delta: students’ passivity, mixed-ability constraints, and limited parental support. Implementing a multi-layered pedagogical framework on 374 students across An Ninh D and My Thuan A Primary Schools, the authors propose five integrated solutions. These include institutionalizing English via mandatory classroom instructions, utilizing the "Think-Pair-Share" technique for peer-mentoring in mixed-ability settings, and scaffolding public speaking through "Show and Tell" to mind-mapping. Furthermore, the integration of role-plays and the innovative "Home Teaching" model—where students act as tutors for their parents—repositions English from a classroom subject to a functional communicative resource.
Preliminary results indicate significant improvements in students' intrinsic motivation and interactional effectiveness. By fostering collaborative linguistic growth and community-based learning, this approach offers a sustainable model for transitioning from EFL to ESL in Expanding Circle contexts. The findings provide practical insights for educators designing inclusive, socially-embedded English instruction within resource-constrained environments, directly contributing to Vietnam’s national ESL roadmap.
