This study investigates the readiness and professional development requirements of pre-service English teachers for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools into their pedagogical practices, in accordance with Vietnam's recently ratified policy on "Making English a Second Language in Schools 2025-2035, with a vision to 2045." The research involved 58 pre-service English teachers from the English Language Education program at Hanoi Metropolitan University during the second semester of the 2025-2026 academic year. This mixed-methods study utilized surveys, focus group discussions, and class observations to evaluate participants' current understanding of AI-enabled pedagogy, their opinions towards the integration of AI tools in language instruction, and the challenges they perceive to implementation. The findings show that the respondents still have limitations in how to integrate AI into their teaching effectively. They also express the challeges in balancing between human interaction and technological usage, and in maintaining learner autonomy whereas with the support of AI. The professional development intervention produced measurable advances in participants' confidence and proficiency in designing AI-informed lesson plans aligning with the policy's aims of personalized learning and quality assurance. The results suggest that successful AI integration in TESOL necessitates structured professional development that encompasses both technical competencies and critical pedagogical reflection on the function of AI in language acquisition. From the analysis, pragmatic recommendations are raised for teacher education programs aiming to equip instructors for Vietnam's dynamic educational environment on the preparation of language teachers for AI-enhanced classrooms.
Biography
Dr. Yen works as Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Manager of the English Language Programme at Hanoi Metropolitan University, Vietnam. With over 24 years of teaching experience, she specializes in English Language education. Dr. Yen earned her Master's degree in English Language Teaching Methodology from the University of Languages and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi in 2008, and completed her PhD in 2019. Her academic interests are theoretical courses including Phonetics and Phonology, Lexicology and Semantics, and Contrastive Analysis, alongside Language Skills, English Teaching Methodology, and ESP subjects. She has authored three ESP textbooks and four books on English teaching methodology in the Vietnamese context, in addition to numerous scholarly articles addressing English teaching methodology, contrastive analysis, and ESP.
