Speaker
Description
This presentation explores the transition from English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to English as a Second Language (ESL) for primary students with special educational needs. In the current educational context in Vietnam, moving toward an ESL approach helps students use English more naturally in daily life. However, applying this transition to students with disabilities requires specific pedagogical adjustments.
The study focuses on three main groups: students with general disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and sensory impairments (visual and hearing). For students with intellectual disabilities, the ESL approach emphasizes simplified vocabulary, repetitive structures, and the use of physical movements (Total Physical Response) to build communication habits. For students with visual or hearing impairments, the transition relies on multi-sensory materials. This includes using high-contrast visual aids for those with low vision and specialized audio tools or sign support for those with hearing challenges.
The author shares practical experiences from a primary school setting, including lesson planning and classroom management. Key findings suggest that an ESL-oriented environment, which focuses on meaningful interaction rather than strict grammar, significantly increases the confidence and participation of students with disabilities.
The presentation concludes with recommendations for primary teachers on how to adapt the "Global Success" curriculum and other materials to create an inclusive ESL classroom. These strategies aim to ensure that no student is left behind in the journey of language integration, regardless of their physical or intellectual challenges.
