Description
Each learner embodies unique interests, strengths, and diverse ways of processing information. These differences foster an inclusive education environment in the pedagogical contexts. By acknowledging the learner needs the English language teacher educators to facilitate dynamic learning experiences for each learner. Particularly, ‘Dyslexia’ is a language learning difficulty that occurs as a neurobiological impairment. In consequence, inclusive teaching gains insights into identifying and supporting every learner inside the classroom. Thus, this interactive workshop, titled “Informal Strategies for Identification of Dyslexia in the Language Classroom’’, strives to empower English language teacher educators about the informal strategies and the practical application tools that can be used inside the language classroom for identification of “Dyslexia” in students. The workshop covers the fundamental remedies for the identification of ‘Dyslexia’ in classroom settings. This session will follow these stages: (1) Reflective task (2) Provide a brief overview of ‘Dyslexia’, define ‘Dyslexia’ and common characteristics (3) Facilitate group discussions (4) Introduce the informal strategies (5) Demonstrations. Thus, the participants will engage in different interactive activities to explore the informal strategies that they can integrate into their pedagogical practices to identify the ‘Dyslexia’ of learners. The educators will equip them with the confidence and skills to recognize the signs of Dyslexia. Eventually, the Professional Development of educators will happen. This workshop titled ‘Exploring Informal Strategies for Identification of Dyslexia in the Language Classroom’ will provide a comprehensive and practical understanding of Dyslexia identification through informal activities for educators in the English language teaching context.
Biography
Sumodya Algamaarachchi holds a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) with a Second Class Upper Division from General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University, Sri Lanka. She has also obtained the CELTA qualification, which has enhanced her practical and communicative teaching skills in English language education.
Currently, she is working as an English Lecturer at Cambridge College of British English, where she conducts both intermediate and upper intermediate level classes. She is passionate about creating engaging and student-centered learning environments that encourage active participation, creativity, and confidence in language learning.
Her academic and professional interests include English language teaching methodologies, learner engagement, classroom interaction, and professional development in language education. She strongly believes in continuous learning and strives to improve her teaching practices through research, collaboration, and innovative approaches to teaching.
As an educator, she aims to inspire students to become confident communicators and lifelong learners.
