Applying ChatGPT-Integrated Chatbots to Enhance Vocabulary Learning and Learner Autonomy in Vietnam’s Emerging ESL Context
As Vietnam gradually shifts toward an ESL-oriented educational model, English learning is increasingly expected to promote communicative competence, learner autonomy, and participation in digital environments. In this context, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into English teaching has become a promising approach, especially in rural and mountainous areas where students often have limited access to personalized learning resources.
This study investigates the application of ChatGPT-integrated chatbots to support English vocabulary learning and develop learner autonomy among Grade 12 students at Tong Lenh High School in Son La Province, Vietnam. The AI-powered chatbots were designed based on the Grade 12 English curriculum and provided vocabulary explanations, IPA pronunciation, contextual examples, interactive exercises, instant feedback, and guided self-study support. The innovation was implemented from September 2025 to March 2026 with students from classes 12A1, 12A3, and 12A9.
Using pedagogical experimentation, classroom observation, surveys, and document analysis, the study found significant improvements in students’ vocabulary acquisition, learning motivation, self-study skills, and confidence in English use. The findings also suggest that ChatGPT-based chatbots can support personalized and learner-centered instruction while contributing to digital transformation in English language education in rural Vietnamese high schools.
