Description

Language assessment literacy relates to the practical skills, theoretical knowledge, social context, and classroom impact of language assessment. A lack of language assessment literacy among teachers is a common concern for language teaching institutions. To address this, the presenters used an established language assessment literacy framework to identify five domains as particularly important for teachers: developing and administering language assessments; assessment in language pedagogy; assessment policy and local practices; assessment principles and interpretation; scoring and rating. To strengthen language assessment literacy across these areas, the presenters developed a series of face-to-face training sessions, self-access training materials, and opportunities for teachers to contribute to assessment development. These initiatives are ongoing, but early feedback suggests they have helped teachers to build a greater understanding of assessment processes and challenges, evaluate teaching materials more critically, and apply marking criteria with increased confidence. The session will briefly introduce key concepts in language assessment literacy before describing the professional learning journey undertaken by the presenters in collaboration with teachers in their institution. Participants will consider how a similar process of identifying teachers’ assessment literacy needs, mapping them onto an established framework, and developing targeted professional learning could be applied in their own contexts.
