Description
In the AI era, Quizizz has become a popular learning, teaching, and assessment tool in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classrooms, particularly for medical students. This study examined students' perceptions of using Quizizz for learning and assessment at the university level. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 30 third-year medical students. The results indicate that most students were satisfied with Quizizz in ESP instruction, finding it engaging and recreational, although internet connectivity issues posed a challenge. While they perceived the platform as effective for enhancing ESP reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and exam review/consolidation, its utility for improving writing and listening skills was seen as limited. Notably, more than 10% of participants disagreed that Quizizz promoted equity in testing. In conclusion, Quizizz serves as a valuable complementary tool in the ESP classroom but cannot fully replace traditional assessment methods. It is recommended that the tool incorporate more features to better support assessment validity and that further research into ESP for medical students be conducted.
Biography
Mr. Nguyễn Hoàng Sơn is a dedicated lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages at Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Born on December 12, 1982, in Thai Binh province, he holds a Master's degree in English Linguistics from Hanoi University (2014–2016) and a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Languages and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (2000–2004).
Mr. Sơn began his career in the IT department at Emerson Electronics (2008–2010) before transitioning to academia. Since 2010, he has served as a lecturer at Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy, specializing in English for medical and pharmaceutical disciplines. His research focuses on curriculum development and evaluation for specialized English training, exemplified by his Master's thesis: "Evaluating English for Pharmaceutical Majors at Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy."
He has contributed significantly to academic literature, publishing research in journals like Giáo dục và Xã hội (Education and Society) and presenting at VIETTESOL conferences on topics such as learner autonomy and online teaching methodologies. His practical expertise is reflected in his co-authorship of six specialized textbooks, including:
English for Pharmaceutical Sciences (2012, 2018, 2020)
English for Preventive Medicine (2023)
Companion workbooks for both disciplines (2021, 2024).
Mr. Sơn holds additional qualifications in programming, French (B1 level), and intermediate political theory. As a Lecturer Rank 1 (Salary scale: 3.6), he continues to advance English language education for healthcare professionals at Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
