Description
Dramatic world changes in recent years have contributed to the significant increase in today’s teen anxiety crisis, social pressure, and emotional complexity. World Health Organization (2024) reported that teenagers may become more vulnerable to mental health issues as a result of emotional and social changes. Thus, promoting social-emotional learning (SEL) in language classrooms is crucial for fostering not only linguistic development, but also psychological well-being and sustainable engagement of the adolescent learners. Recent research has proved the positive influence of SEL on adolescent learners’ academic achievement, motivation, empathy and long-term resilience.
This interactive workshop aims to explore how SEL skills and values can be effectively integrated into English language lessons to support teens’ holistic development, which is beneficial to the sustainability of education. Drawing on the CASEL framework and the goals of sustainable education, this session highlights core SEL skills, including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, and explores how these skills can be effectively incorporated into language lessons.
In this workshop, participants will engage in interactive activities, explore hands-on strategies, and collaborate to design SEL-based lesson plans that align with learners’ language competence development and social-emotional well-being. Participants will be offered an SEL-infused lesson plan template and tailored activities for teens, such as emotions check-ins, talking circles, journal writing, problem-solving challenges, and empathy-building exercises. Implementing these actionable classroom activities and practices helps develop socially meaningful and emotionally supportive lessons, fostering an inclusive and sustainable learning environment.
