Description

Many EFL learners encounter difficulties with English sentence structure and parts of speech, which negatively impact their performance in the grammar and reading sections of standardized tests. This challenge necessitates instructional methods that make abstract grammatical concepts tangible and engaging.

This session introduces two practical web-based tools designed to address this issue by providing visually intuitive means to explore sentence components and grammatical roles. The first tool is a real-time, color-coded grammar visualizer that enables learners to input sentences and immediately see highlighted word classes, thereby supporting self-editing and error recognition. The second tool is a simplified reading assistant that incorporates part-of-speech tagging to help learners skim and scan test passages more effectively, facilitating paraphrasing and strategic reading.

Through a classroom case study, the presenter demonstrates how these tools were integrated with clear learning objectives, beginning with an understanding of the subject's role in basic sentence structure and progressing to the recognition of individual word types in context. Activities included guided self-correction, comparative sentence analysis, and focused reading strategies aligned with test preparation requirements.

Results indicated improved learner engagement, deeper reflection on grammar, and measurable gains in grammatical accuracy and reading comprehension. This session emphasizes that effective Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) integration relies on aligning technology use with learners' specific needs rather than adopting tools for novelty alone. Participants will leave with actionable insights to implement visual grammar tools thoughtfully in their test preparation classrooms.
