Description

As AI technology gets more embedded in a mobile learning context, it is worth investigating the potential of AI to facilitate oral language development and learner engagement. In this article, we consider the integration of two mobile AI applications, called VoiceGPT and TalkBackAI, to assist English language learners with real-time speech practices and feedback. Based on a mixed-method research design, the study was conducted with 268 students attending EFL speaking classes in Vietnam from three different universities.
Quantitative data were obtained through a structured survey measuring Perceived Usefulness, Speaking Confidence, and Engagement, with qualitative data from focus group interviews providing contextual information. Confirmatory factor analysis corroborated the three-factor structure of the questionnaire, which demonstrated high internal consistency and good construct validity. Students indicated that they were speaking more spontaneously, experiencing less practice anxiety, and becoming more motivated to use English outside the classroom.
Nevertheless, results indicated limitations in voice recognition accuracy for regional accents and variable response time. The study suggests mobile AI could help increase access to speaking practice and offers possibilities for enhancing voice-responsive technologies in language learning.

Biography

With six years of experience as an ESL teacher, I focus on helping students overcome difficulties they often face when learning English, especially in grammar, pronunciation, and fluency. I believe that creating a positive and supportive classroom atmosphere helps students feel confident and motivated to improve their language skills.

I hold certifications in Aptis and TESOL, and I have passed the TOEIC exam. Additionally, I completed the Teaching English: Spark Your Ideas course offered by VietTESOL. One of the projects I contributed to was Debate Using the Six Thinking Hats Framework, which helps students develop their critical thinking and discussion skills.

During my studies, I was fortunate to achieve several honors, including ranking among the top five in a school-wide translator contest and maintaining merit student status for five years. From 2018 to 2020, I was also proud to be recognized as one of the top five excellent students in the English department.

Over the past six years, I have taught at language centers, given private lessons, and worked as an interpreter for Vietnamese-English lectures. My research efforts were also rewarded with two third-place prizes in school-level scientific research competitions.
