Complex grammatical structures are key to expressing meaning, style, and aesthetic values of classical literary texts, yet they pose significant challenges for modern readers and language learners due to their rarity in everyday use. This study aims to examine how such structures—particularly subordinate clauses and inversions—function in a selected classical literary work. It also investigates the role of grammar in conveying the authors' messages and achieving stylistic goals. Mostly based on the content analysis and the tool Sketch Engine, the study analyzes a classical literary work to identify and interpret complex structures such as subordinate clauses, and inversions. The results highlights how these structures are employed in this literary work and then features contribute to the authors' style and narrative manners. Ultimately, this research provides guidelines for readers to navigate and appreciate classical texts more effectively.
Biography
Nhan Do Thanh his currently a lecturer at Can Tho University. He has a particular interest in teaching academic writing. He is going to start his PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Auckland this September.
Hieu Pham Trong is a senior student at Can Tho University majoring in English Studies.
