Description

This study investigates the relationship between Vietnamese university students’ self-assessment and their midterm test performance. By using a quantitative research design, data were collected from a sample of 110 non-English major students from 4 academic English classes at Van Lang University. A linear regression analysis was conducted to examine whether students’ self-assessment of their own four skills predict midterm test scores. The results indicate a statistically significant positive correlation between students’ self-assessment and their midterm test scores (R² = 0.449, p < .001). Specifically, the model explains about 44.9% of the variability in the midterm test performance, and this relationship is highly statistically significant. These findings suggest that students who self-assess with higher scores in four English skills tend to perform better in their midterm test performance.

Biography

A Tron, M.A. in TESOL, is a dedicated full-time lecturer at the Language Institute of Van Lang University in Vietnam. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from Ho Chi Minh City Open University and later pursued a Master’s degree in TESOL from Vietnam National University - University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-USSH). With a strong passion for advancing language education, he has been actively involved in integrating Artificial Intelligence into his teaching methodologies. He focuses on creating and operating efficient testing systems tailored for non-English majors, ensuring that assessments are both effective and engaging. His research interests encompass a wide range of topics, including the development of AI-driven tests, innovative instructional strategies, core values in ELT, and enhancing student motivation. Additionally, he explores dialect linguistics, aiming to understand how regional variations influence language learning. His commitment to improving English education makes him a valuable asset to his students and the academic community.
