Description
This study investigates the challenges faced by English language teachers at Hanoi University of Business and Technology (HUBT) in assessing speaking and writing skills. Despite the critical role of assessment in language education, many teachers at HUBT lack formal training in testing and assessment, leading to difficulties in designing, administering, and grading speaking and writing tests. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 teachers and analysis of assessment documents, including rubrics and test materials. The findings reveal that teachers face significant challenges, including time constraints during speaking tests, subjectivity in grading, lack of clear assessment criteria, and limited training in testing and assessment. These challenges contribute to inconsistencies in grading and undermine the reliability and validity of assessments. Based on the findings, this study recommends the development of standardized rubrics, professional development programs, moderation practices, and institutional guidelines to improve assessment practices at HUBT. The study highlights the need for greater attention to teacher training in language assessment and provides practical solutions for enhancing the quality of speaking and writing assessments in the Vietnamese higher education context.Despite some limitations, the research is worth reading and considering by the leadership of educational institutions in Vietnam to improve the reliability and validity in testing and assessment process.
