Description

Purpose – This study aims to investigate the effects of task-based language teaching (TBLT) with listening activities on freshmen students’ English listening skills at Ba Ria – Vung Tau College of Education.
Methodology: The research subjects were 64 English major students from Ba Ria – Vung Tau College of Education during the 2024-2025 academic year. The participants were divided into two groups: a control group and an experimental group. Based on a three-phase framework (i.e., pre-task, while-task, and post-task), the TBLT method was implemented with the experimental group for one semester, while the control group was taught using a traditional method. The research employed mixed methods, and the instruments used were listening tests, questionnaire surveys, and interviews.
Findings – The students in the experimental group were able to satisfactorily complete the guided tasks in English, indicating the potential of these tasks as a device to strengthen their listening skills. Moreover, they generally had a positive attitude towards TBLT.
Significance – These findings offer significant pedagogical insights for teachers and students at Ba Ria – Vung Tau College of Education (BVCE) and for future researchers. In addition to confirming the effectiveness of TBLT, this study highlights the promising use of context-specific lessons and class activities as an avenue for young learners to enhance listening skills
